FAQ

All toll roads in Virginia accept E-ZPass as a form of payment. The other payment types accepted depend on the particular toll road and location. Toll facilities that only accept electronic toll payments (known as All Electronic Tolling or AET) such as Dulles Toll Road, ERT, SNJB, Dominion Boulevard, will take a picture of your license plate and send you an invoice/statement if you do not have an E-ZPass. All Express Lanes in Virginia require an E-ZPass. If you travel on Express Lanes without an E-ZPass you will receive a toll invoice or violation notice unless you go to that particular facility’s website and make a missed toll payment within a certain number of days of the transaction before the invoice is issued. Other roads in Virginia provide cash options and some accept credit cards in the lanes. Visit the toll facilities page on this site for more information and links to each of the toll facilities.
Many toll roads in Virginia provide the opportunity for you to proactively pay for a missed toll on that facility. By paying the toll soon after you travel you can avoid receiving a notice or invoice. Typically, there is a small administrative fee associated with the missed toll payment, but this is often lower than the fees that will be due if you wait for a toll invoice or a violation notice. Some facilities may only allow this for a limited number of tolls or events.
If you know you recently drove on a toll facility without paying, you can use the missed toll page at the link below to explore your options.

Depending on the rental company, you may be able to pay a missed toll before the rental company receives a notice/invoice. Some rental companies have E-ZPass accounts and the transaction will post to these accounts. If that happens, the toll transactions will not be available for payment. In this case, you will need to work with the rental company according to your rental agreement.
